From Goodreads:
When literature student Anastasia Steele interviews successful entrepreneur Christian Grey, she finds him very attractive and deeply intimidating. Convinced that their meeting went badly, she tries to put him out of her mind - until he turns up at the store where she works part-time, and invites her out. Unworldly and innocent, Ana is shocked to find she wants this man. And, when he warns her to keep her distance, it only makes her want him more. But Grey is tormented by inner demons, and consumed by the need to control. As they embark on a passionate love affair, Ana discovers more about her own desires, as well as the dark secrets Grey keeps hidden away from public view ...

When I got this whole series for my birthday I was super excited about it. I had heard so many amazing things and couldn't wait to start it. I think the covers are pretty beautiful and I am a sucker for a pretty cover. My thoughts after reading? What a disappointment. I am very disappointed in this book. I think it is no where near as good as everyone is making it out to be and I don't really understand why there is so much hype surrounding this book. In my honest opinion I am quite shocked and horrified that this is what is being classed as bestseller material.

Innocent student Anastasia meets the mysterious attractive billionaire Christian Grey. Following her instant attraction to him, something she has never experienced before, Ana is introduced to a new dark world. But will she follow Christian into the dark or will she follow herself and separate from his dark and seductive world?

This book has so many positive reviews and I know it has a huge fan base and there is a lot of love out there for this series. I don't see the appeal of this book at all. I find it all quite disturbing to be honest and I felt physically sick through reading most of it. I only continued this book to it's conclusion because of friends convincing me too. I am glad that I did because it isn't as bad as I thought. I thought it was a terrible story... well it kind of is but it's not as bad as I first thought. The writing style is absolutely horrendous and I don't think I've ever read a book with a worse writing style than this one. I really hated the writing in it and it really made me dislike the book straight away.

I find the characters the most dislikable characters I have ever read about. I don't see the appeal of Christian Grey. I find his the most unlikable masochistic dick I have ever read about. Even at the end of the book I still don't like him. Ana was worse. She is the stupidest idiotic character I've ever read. Reading through her narration I wanted to beat my head against the wall... repeatedly. I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me but I honestly hated both characters through the majority of the book. I find it actually unbelievable and unrealistic that this innocent girl who believes in true love would go into a relationship like this with Christian. I don't care how good looking he is I'd have punched him! I just find is horrifying that she would choose to be in this abusive relationship. Yes I said abusive as that is how I see it. Christian is completely emotionally abusing her in my opinion and she is so innocent and to me comes across as if she is frightened to displease him.

The only thing that appeals me with this book is the fact that Christian has many psychological problems. As a psychologist I found him intriguing an wondered why he would act this way. Is it because he has unspeakable things happen to him while he was a child that now he needs to control every aspect of his life. I will continue with the series, mainly because I am very curious to see why he is this way and what happened to him to make him this way.

The ending of the book is what redeemed it a little for me. I heard a lot of people were sad with the ending of this book. I was overjoyed. I thought Wow, so Ana has some sense after all. Finally! And by god, I almost had a heart attack, Christian showing some emotion, could it be that there is something human in him afterall?

It's fair to say I not a fan of this book. At. All! I am shocked that this is what is classed as bestseller material. I have read and enjoyed many indie books so much more than this. However I am going to persevere and try and read the rest of the series and I really hope I enjoy it more.  I wanted to like this series so much and if you love this series good, I'm glad you love it. I wish I did but this just fell short for me.

  1. Agree with you hands down. It's shoddy literature, and if somebody writes inner goddess once more I will snap! I understand its fan fiction, but really it should have stayed as fan fiction because honestly, did she even have an editor?!

Repition, annoying voice of main character and generally it isn't worth the time of day. Bestseller, I'm so disappointed that women cannot find anything better to read!

  6. Whoohoo! Love the review. Thank YOU for sharing your opinions. And I do hope you eventually read the rest of the series, if only to hate on it a little more. ;)

  7. I am not going to hate on you for not liking it, I believe everyone has different tastes and that's perfectly okay. For me, I enjoyed the book. Some things really annoy me (inner goddess needs to calm down a bit.. she was pissing me off) but I like the story and as you read, you get to see more of Christian and understand things about him. Overall, the writing isn't great either but I look past that at the story (as a psych major as well.. it fascinates me). I do hope you finish the series at some point! :)
